Nottingham
City Council Jobs
There are over 13,000 people who have a
Nottingham City Council job. The council’s website claims that
they always need new people to help them deliver services to
the people of Nottingham. At the time this article was written,
the current vacancies page on the council’s website only had
three adverts for non-school jobs.
However, I discovered that there were
several jobs offered earlier this year. The closing date for
those postings was March 19th. It’s safe to assume all those
positions have been filled. But, it appears the council’s
recruitment process is ongoing. This seems to contradict a BBC
article dated February 2010 which said Nottingham City Council
would have to cut about 200 jobs from its workforce in order to
meet budget proposals. It went on to say children centres,
libraries and trading standards would be affected.
But in my opinion, it seems worthwhile for
anyone hoping to land a job with the council to keeping
checking for vacancies, considering the fact that the council
hired several people after that article was published. The
range of occupations employed by the council is a varied list
which includes youth workers, accounts, teaching assistants,
highways technicians, social workers, trading standards
officers, and dog wardens to name a few. In fact, the council’s
website says there are over 600 types of jobs within the
council.
Benefits for people with Nottingham City
Council jobs are comparable to other city council jobs across
the UK. The council prides itself as a good employer, so why
don’t we take a look at some of the benefits it offers? Oh, I
should mention that council employees need to register with the
council’s Works Perks before they can take advantage of the
benefits.
We could begin by looking at discounts
council workers are entitled to. Staff discounts are available
on several products and services like travel, eating out,
sports, shopping and more. Employees who have children in a
registered childcare centre may find the council’s childcare
vouchers scheme useful.
Annual leave is a minimum of 20 days each
year. This is apart from the standard bank holidays. There’s no
doubt the council also has provisions for other kinds of leave
such as maternity and paternity leave.
Like other council’s in the UK, Nottingham has flexible working
options so employees can balance their work life and other
obligations, such as family responsibilities and personal
interests. Also offered is a health and wellbeing service which
features free confidential advisory and counselling services to
employees and their families.
Lastly, council employees are eligible to
join the Local Government Pension Scheme, which some people
describe as one of the best pension scheme in the UK. Of course
there are other benefits I didn’t mention, but if you are
curious, you can visit the council’s employee benefit page on
its website.
I’ll now turn attention to the council’s
recruitment process. If you plan to apply, you’ll need to fill
out an application form. Downloading it is the easiest and
fastest way, but it can also be requested by phone or email.
Another alternative is to pick one up at Lawrence House. Even
if you have your CV prepared for the council job you’re
interested in, you’ll still need the application form to
accompany your CV.
