Anyone who lives in the city of Leeds and
has a Leeds City Council job is working for the largest single
employers in the city. It also means that person can be working
in any one of a myriad of career fields and positions.
With a population of around 750,000, Leeds
is the third most populous city in the UK. It takes a multitude
of people to keep its cogs turning smoothly. This multitude has
to perform a great number of widely varied jobs.
Leeds City Council employs cooks, arborist, engineers,
Librarians, childcare assistants, driver escorts, and
gardeners. This list is only a few. In fact, the council
employs about 32,000 people.
The Leeds City Council website boasts
various programs which are in place to aid Leeds’s residents
who are interested in working for the council. To begin with,
there’s the jobs and skills service.
On the jobs and skills page of the website,
the heading reads: “jobs and skills offers a range of services
and programmes aimed at moving unemployed people into jobs or
training.”
The page goes on to outline service such as
Jobshops, which are in place to support people who have
difficulty accessing training and employment opportunities.
Here, job seekers can obtain advice on jobs that may interest
them, as well as, advice on training opportunities that will
help them get the job they want. There’s also help with
upgrading or preparing a curriculum vitae. It’s all free of
charge. The webpage also mentions a citywide network of
Jobshops, 13 locations in fact. In addition, jobshop sessions
are frequently held at various locations.
Another service offered under the Jobs and
Skills umbrella is the NHS Employability Programme, which is a
training opportunity for unemployed residents of Leeds to train
as clerical administrator and nursing assistants. To provide
this service, Leeds City Council has partnered with Leeds
Teaching Hospital. So, trainees gain work and experience in a
hospital environment. Pathways to Work is a service that was
designed especially to assist people who have been out of work,
because of a health issue or a disability, and want to take
steps to get back into the workforce.
Anyone who has a Leeds City Council job is
eligible to apply for one of the city council’s Work4Leeds
Apprenticeship Frameworks. It doesn’t matter how long the
person has been working for the council, as long as they are
working at least 16 hours per week. Work4Leeds is part of a
recruitment strategy designed to lead to career opportunities
with Leeds City Council. It’s also designed to hire apprentices
from within the organization.
Apprentices are paid the going rate for the
job field they are apprenticing. These apprenticeships are
offered on two levels: the apprenticeship level 2, which is
equal to five GCSEs A* - C and the advanced apprenticeship
level 3, which is equal to two A levels. Since these
apprenticeships are recognized nationally, apprentices can take
their qualifications and skills to any employer anywhere in the
country, if and when they decide to move on.
